The new Silvertown Tunnel in East London will help to alleviate congestion on the Blackwall Tunnel. As the tunnel was built by a private contractor, TfL now needs to pay off the £2.2bn construction debt.
Sadiq Khan has proposed a charge of up to £4 per crossing on both the Silvertown Tunnel and the (currently free) Blackwall Tunnel. This would apply to everyone, regardless of where they live. We think this is unfair on residents whose livelihoods rely on the tunnel, who may be charged nearly £3,000 every year to cross the river.
We are proposing that those residents living in nearby Boroughs should be allowed to pay for an 'annual pass', much like the Dartford Crossing, which would allow them to cross unlimited times in a year for one affordable fee.
As the toll is being put in place to pay back the cost of constructing the new tunnel, we are also calling for Sadiq Khan to guarantee that the toll will be scrapped as soon as the debt is paid.
