New analysis has revealed that fare dodging on the TfL network is far worse than previously admitted, with evasion on some services up to twice as high as earlier estimates. The cost to taxpayers now stands at a staggering £190 million a year – £60 million more than the figure officials used to cite. The tram is worst hit, with up to 7.8% of passengers evading the fare, whilst on the Tube, that figure is around 1 in 20 passengers. TfL admits this “selfish, criminal minority” is forcing fare hikes on honest passengers, with incidents of violence often sparked by fare disputes.
Law-abiding passengers are sick of footing inflation-busting fare rises, whilst seeing fare-dodgers brazenly push through the barriers. It's time for Sadiq Khan to pull his finger out and do something about it!
