Susan Hall AM, Leader of the City Hall Conservatives, has reacted this morning to news that the National Grooming Gang Inquiry is to have a special focus on London to establish a clearer picture of the scale of abuse in the capital.
A London-focused module of the national inquiry was a key recommendation of Susan Hall’s report into grooming gangs in London, In the Shadows, which was published in January of this year. The investigation sought to understand how child protection services could have failed to keep children safe from predatory gangs.
The news comes amid an investigation into grooming gangs at London City Hall’s Police & Crime Committee, chaired by and long-advocated for by Assembly Member Hall, which has heard already from journalists about their findings and how authorities failed.
In a quote, Susan Hall AM said:
“It is shocking that this need even be announced - there can be no question in a city of 9 million people that this pernicious evil must exist in the shadows, ignored or unseen by authorities. A London focus should always have been on the cards and certainly established before today. These vulnerable young people have been abused and exploited by monsters without any prospect of justice in sight, and now we must put our collective effort into undoing what is bound to be the greatest scandal of our age. No stone can be left unturned, and I hope that the inquiry follows every lead - regardless of how senior or uncomfortable it is - to see that anyone who perpetrated, ignored, covered up, or supported this appalling evil is brought to full justice.”
