Labour refuse to disband Sadiq Khan's statue-toppling commission

Today in the London Assembly, the Labour Group voted down the GLA Conservatives' motion calling for the Mayor to "immediately disband the Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm".

Sadiq Khan set up the £247,000 commission to review and possibly remove London's landmarks, including statues, plaques and street names. He announced the commission last year after Black Lives Matter protesters desecrated The Cenotaph and statues of Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln.

Susan Hall AM, Leader of the GLA Conservatives, commented: Sadiq Khan must immediately disband his unelected activist commission. They have no right to be judge and jury on our nation’s history. The Mayor must stop playing politics with our past.

“We have a long history filled with good, bad and ugly moments. It’s our past, and we can’t change it. No politician or commission should be allowed to erase or hide it from public view.

“Labour’s vote shows their complete disregard for taxpayers’ cash and how little they think of our nation’s long history.”
