Sadiq Khan wants to build over London's Green Belt.

Petition:

We, the undersigned, call on the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to immediately abandon his proposals to release London’s Green Belt for development.

 

We are disappointed that the Mayor has U-turned on his pledge to oppose building on London’s Green Belt, announcing he will release protected land for housing development in the London Plan. The Mayor is refusing to name which areas could be impacted, with parks and green spaces right across London under threat.

 

The Green Belt exists for the long-term benefit of all Londoners - not as a short-term fix for the Mayor's policy failures. These areas are vital for biodiversity, carbon capture, flood prevention and the mental wellbeing of Londoners, especially those without access to private outdoor space.

 

We also oppose Transport for London’s proposals to develop housing on park land.

 

Affordable housing starts under Sadiq Khan’s watch have fallen to record lows and now the Government has cut his housebuilding targets. Vast brownfield sites remain underused, industrial land lies idle, and permitted schemes go unbuilt. Rather than protecting the Green Belt, the Mayor is using his proposals as a political distraction from his own failed housing strategy. Every Londoner should have the opportunity to have a home of their own. This can be achieved through real leadership and delivery - not by concreting over protected parks and green spaces.

 

We urge the Mayor of London to:

 

  • Abandon plans to release Green Belt land for development;

  • Protect green spaces, including parks, from inappropriate development, and;

  • Deliver a new strategy to unlock brownfield sites and underused land within London.

 

Once it’s gone, it’s gone. London’s Green Belt belongs to all of us - and we must act now to protect it.
